ARTHUR JAFA: “WHAT IS THE COMPULSION THAT PRECEDES YOUR PRACTICE?

I love to consume media—books, music, TV shows, movies, and in a different sense, food.
I create because I want to be involved in those worlds, I crave the need to be a part of what I do in my free time.
Perhaps I will look on YouTube for the 2009 MTV performance, in which Lady Gaga sings “Paparazzi” and covers herself in fake blood… just to be inspired to dye my air blonde and pink. Or I will read an article about Celtic fruit burning for the New Year and consider a candle as my object for a school assignment.
I enjoy the spontaneous compulsion to create rather than a tedious, melodic practice. I rather have a burst of inspiration and see what comes of it. I am not much of a planner, yet I hate when things do not go my way.
I create because I love it. I never like being told what to make and when. The “...compulsion that proceeds my practice..." is finding myself and enjoying the moment and letting whatever comes next, simply happen.
